The Musings of Reverend Catherine Harrington
March, 2006

Ah, March! The days have grown noticeably longer and the evenings linger with a silky glow that teases with a familiarity of spring. It’s coming! For a while last month it seemed as though winter had decided to take up permanent residence. To add insult to injury many of our local restaurants decided to close at the same darn time. What is that about? Not one of them consulted us. Thank God for the Grand Hotel, they’re always open.

The rhythm of this community and this congregation offers a wide assortment of things to look forward to and other things to simply cope with. The population of our little town will soon swell to summer size and we will welcome home our “fair weather friends” again. I can’t wait to see them with their tanned faces from that warm Southern sun. I miss ‘em, dang it! The problem is that whether we know it or not, each person, be it adult or child, member or friend, and even the occasional visitor, each person enhances the whole of who we are.

The recent survey of members revealed that a strong majority of you feel one of our strengths is the people who make up our church community. I would have to agree, especially when we are gathered together. Our collective spirit on Sunday mornings can brighten even the dreariest of winter days, take the chill off and lift the weight of the heaviest burden. Don’t you love it when the choir is brimming with voices and the sanctuary is bustling with life? Our sanctuary becomes sacred by our very presence, by our hopes and our dreams, our joys and our concerns, our laughter and our tears. We consecrate each other! And, don’t you just have to smile when the blanket isn’t big enough for the children during the Story for All Ages? I do.

It matters when you come to church. It matters to everybody. It really does.

In faith, Cathy
