July 6 - UUA General Assembly 2008 Through the Eyes of Reverend Catherine Harrington and Ed and Alice Dennison
Can you imagine thousands of UU’s under one roof, worshipping, debating, discussing, teaching, learning, voting on social justice issues, public witness, governance, and dancing, singing, and playing? This year we will elect a new president of the UUA. General Assembly is an invigorating and inspiring experience, to say the least! This year’s Ware Lecturer, Van Jones, is working to combine solutions to America's two biggest problems: social inequality and environmental destruction.
July 13 - Taking the War Out of Our Words
Reverend Catherine Harrington
Taking the War Out of Our Words; the Art of Powerful Non-Defensive Communication is a book written by Sharon Ellison. This book provides insights and tools for increasing self-esteem, healing and transforming relationships, and promoting peace in our lives and in the world.
Human beings can interact in a limited number of ways. We can use our senses—sight, sound, taste, touch and smell. We can talk, listen and even interact on a telepathic level. In each case, we exchange and create certain types of energy. The energy created by the traditional dynamics of verbal communication causes people to suffer pain and violence. I still feel certain it doesn’t have to be this way. I’m increasingly convinced that our communication methods determine our individual and global reality.
July 20 King Solomon’s Temple
Dr. Louis Yock
Place is important to us. Place is able to add to our experience, help create an emotion, provide an environment to accomplish. However, as we learn from the Hebrew Scriptures, interior space is even more important, and more controllable.
July 27 God the Father
Reverend Catherine Harrington
In a sermon last month, I quoted Rebecca Ann Parker, president of Starr King School for the Ministry, and I thought it might be interesting to explore the history of God.
For the past 200 years, in the name of justice and liberation, religious liberals have hastened the death of God. We have presided over the death of God the King, God the Father, God the Unmoved Mover, God the Old White Man in the Sky, the Able-Bodied God, the Straight God, the All-Knowing God, the Leave-It-All-To-Me-I’ll-Take-Care-Of-It God, and more. In place of all that we have emphasized human responsibility. The God of Live, God the “creative power of love’ is alive and well, and we know it is in our hands to create justice, equity, compassion, and peace. — from “An Open Letter to the Rev. Bill Sinkford; UUA president.”
